The Mean Scene #13

Photo: Tez Himself

One half of the voices of Explosive Pro Wrestling, and the two time WPW Commentator of the Year, Mean Dean Olsen brings WPW all the latest on the EPW scene.

Welcome to the Mean Scene, this month we take a look at Evolution 2011, Explosive Pro Wrestling in it’s 10th year has been putting on some amazing shows and this one was no different. It was yet another historic night for EPW with many big matches that will have big repercussions in the future.

The night started off with a six man number 1 contender's match for the EPW championship, before the match even started Bobby Marshall was ejected from the match up due to being in ‘no condition’ to perform, a perplexing situation and rather strange of Bobby but it was the right choice and in his place Johnny Wimbledon was put in. The match also had Carlo Cannon, Dan Moore, Chris Vice, Jimmy Payne and also returning from his fantastic stint in Japan Mikey Nicholls. This match was a high octane fast paced bout with action all over the place and in the end it came down to Cannon and Mikey. After some great exchanges, it was Carlo Cannon who got the victory and now is the new number 1 contender for the EPW championship.

'Hollywood' Kiel Steria was up next in the match against Alex Kingston that he issued the challenge for at Midday Mayhem. The 'Innovator of Radness' had the odds against him with Steria’s entourage on the outside trying to give him the advantage at every turn. Kingston, as tenacious as he is, never gave up and defied those odds by going Coast to Coast and defeating Hollywood, much to the dismay of the Entourage. The future of Alex Kingston in EPW is looking very bright, be sure to keep an eye on this one folks.

Time for some tag team action next as some of the new generation of EPW were on show as the new tag team of Adam Banks and Brett Foxx went up against Hayden Zenith from the Entourage and a new international acquisition to EPW, the 'Bolly Boy’ Eddy Bombay. Now if Bombay and Zenith were victorious, the Bolly Boy would get to join the ranks of the Entourage. When the match began, it was all Banks and Foxx. This new team showed athleticism and great tag team chemistry, where as Eddy Bombay never entered the match as he was too busy parading to fans at ring side. Foxx and Banks made short work of Zenith and won the match and in the process impressing many in the crowd at the Vasto Club.

The celebration was cut short as the Blackest Hour made their entrance and started to beat down the winners. Rick Sanders then issued an open challenge to anyone back stage to face the big man Dorian. The challenge was accepted by Gavin McGavin, who has been told by Brett Corvus if he can string together five consecutive wins, he can get a title shot in the future. The 'Shootfighter' came out head strong and ready to battle, not backing down to the big man. Dorian eventualy got a hold of McGavin and things did not look good, but then Richter made a surprise appearance and whilst Dorian was distracted Gavin rolled him up and got the win. Just four more wins to go now for the 'Shootfighter.'

The first title match of the night was next as 'Shotgun’ Tyler Jacobs defended his EPW Hardcore title against Chase Griffin in a Chain Match. With the two competitors bound together by a chain, this match was was tough to begin with. Both men battled it out and used many weapons along the way, guard rails, chairs and panels of wood all got used as both men were busted open and bleeding heavily. After putting up a great fight and showing a lot of heart Chase was defeated by Jacobs with a lariat wrapped in chain and after the match Tyler looked upon Chase as if he may have proven to Jacobs that he does have what it takes to be hardcore.

After the half time break, we had the Tag Team title match between Team Allstar, Sebastian Sander and The Don defending against the new ‘Taylor Made Diamonds’, AZ Vegara and Jay Taylor, along side the lovely Amber. Before the match started Amber gave the ref a note from Brett Corvus banning Brad West and Vin Penhero from ringside. As soon as the bell rang AZ and JT were all business cutting all the corners they could and focusing all their work on the Don, isolating him. Keeping Sander out of the match was a smart plan but when he hit the ring, it was chaos, he was a man possessed. In the end though it was AZ and JT who managed to get the better of the Allstars and we saw new tag team champions crowned. It is the first time either man has won EPW gold and will be interesting to see how things go in the red hot tag team division after this.

Jamie Jurah next was in a match with ‘Gorgeous’ Garry Schmidt, After destroying Barry last month Jurah did much of the same to his brother at Evolution. When the match was over with and Garry was in a bad way Jamie got on the mic again declaring he should be the EPW champion and even called out Jimmy Payne. In an interesting turn of events, he offered the Schmidts a chance to be part of “Team Jurah”, which Barry accepted, much to Garry's dismay. It will be interesting to see what happens next for Jamie and ‘Team Jurah’.

The Last Man Standing EPW championship match was next with Marcius Pitt defending his newly won title against Davis Storm. Now the word ‘epic’ is thrown around way too much these days (especially on the internet) but that is exactly what this match was, epic. As soon as Pitt walked out, Storm attacked wasting no time at all. The two brawled all around the Vasto Club, hurling each other into walls, bashing each other with chairs, slamming each other onto the hard concrete floor, it was devastation.

When things got back to ring side the carnage continued with Pitt hitting Storm with a belly to belly overhead suplex on the floor. Storm seemed to be concussed and on the verge of defeat. The 'Golden Greek' even went as far to detach the top ring rope and start choking out the 'Ironman.' We all thought this was it, but like we had seen so many times, Storm fought back and ended up nailing a Rolling Storm and kept Pitt down for the 10 count. The 'Ironman' had won back his EPW Championship and the crowd loved it.

Before Storm could have time to celebrate Carlo Cannon came out and got in his face. During this heated exchange Mikey Nicholls came out and Mikey kicked Cannon, then he got in the face of Storm as well. One thing is for sure, you can not afford to miss any of the up coming EPW shows, with all the possibilities on the horizon you never know whats going to happen next in Explosive Pro Wrestling.

Until next time, keep supporting local wrestling and stay tuned to www.epwperth.com

TMDK: Gaijin Warriors

For three months the Team Murder Death Kill duo of Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste competed in the land of the Rising Sun for the Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion. While they were in the country, Japan suffered terrible tragedy with the Earthquakes and Tsunami. Tez got the opportunity to speak to the duo in the middle of their tour and ask them about their experiences both wrestling wise and what it was like to be there while the country was going through turmoil.

Photo: Pro Wrestling NOAH

WPW: How did you feel when you were invited to Japan by NOAH?
Mikey: It was kinda surreal. We had made some good contacts through our time in Missouri with Harley Race and I thought everything went really well, but then to finally get the call was great. Made me realize that for once I had actually made some good decisions.!

Shane: Felt good man. Didn’t think we would hear from them so it was quite a surprise.

WPW: What is the training at the NOAH dojo like. Do they use the Strong Style in training?

Mikey: The training here is similar to the type of training I used to do years ago at the New Japan Dojo in LA. Its very conditioning based, be it squats, pushups or crunches. Also stretching is a big part of the training. Its like anything though, you get out of it what you put in. Leaving all pre-conceived ideas at the door makes training so enjoyable, and just to fully embrace yourself in the traditions and ideas behind it has been great.

Shane: Like Mike said training here is lots of conditioning, which I think is great. A few of the guys here use to be on the Army wrestling team too so from time to time I try to get into the ring with them and try hold my own (laughs). There is no ‘strong style’ over here, over here there’s just wrestling. So at training we just wrestle, out in matches on shows is where peoples strong style comes out and is not something that can be replicated in training.

WPW: Has it been difficult to work with the language differences?

Mikey: Yes and no. A lot of wrestling is very universal and so even if neither person speaks the same language, the basis is still the same, and the idea is still the same. But having said that, it does make for some fun conversations when trying to put some stuff together!

Shane: You get used to it. I mean I speak pretty bad English as it is so half the time even in America people didn’t understand what I was saying.

WPW: What is it like working in front of the Japanese crowds and how have they taken to you?

Mikey: It is different that’s for sure. Very held back and quiet, although like anywhere, if a crowd likes what you are doing they are going to get into it and get a bit loud. Considering we came into this with no momentum and no one knew who we were, I think they have taken to us pretty well. I think that we also bring something a little bit different too, if nothing else just by the way we interact with the crowd and each other.

Shane: People love me where ever I go. I don’t know if it’s my good looks or my charm but they're always asking for photos and autographs after the shows. Of course sometimes they call me Mikey which I don’t get but I smile and sign anyways. But for reals I love the crowds here, fun to react with and allow me to do some character stuff with them.

WPW: Is this tour a one off or are you expecting to return in the future?

Mikey: I'm just making the most of the opportunity that has been given to us. I don’t like to put too much thought into the future otherwise you just drive yourself insane. Like I said before, I'm just trying to make the best of what we are doing right now and the opportunities put in front of us, it’s a once in a lifetime thing, so im trying to treat it as such.

Shane: I hope it leads to more trips and I think they like us (laughs). Japan's a great place to wrestle and wrestling is treated with such respect, I would come back straight away if they asked.

Photo: Pro Wrestling NOAH

WPW: With the tragedy that has occurred in Japan, were there any thoughts of leaving and what is it like to be there while all this is going on?

Mikey: When everything happened neither me nor Shane had any idea what was going on, what with the language barrier and the fact that the only news we were hearing was whatever was on the news back home, which was of course all bad. So I mean its natural for that thought to come to mind. But we didn’t really have much time to think about it as we left for a tour the next day. The tour was down to the south of Japan and so we were a long way away from where the worst of it hit. It has been interesting now that we are back in Tokyo, walking into a once full convenience store and seeing the shelves bare. Very crazy.

Shane: So, I'm answering these questions about a week after Mike had. So things are getting back to normal I guess, there’s still earthquakes every now and again but not as bad as the other one. The biggest thing I was worried about while we were on tour was coming back to a Tokyo with radiation in the air but its all good. Just don’t drink from the taps.

WPW: Have you been able to catch up with old friends like Karl Anderson and Prince Devitt?

Mikey: We caught with Karl Anderson one our first weeks here. I hadn’t seen him for a while so it was great to catch up with him. What started out as some food and some drinks turned into a very long night and an even longer few days to recover, but was really great to see him. Fergal and I tend to run into each other all over the world, so definitely going to catch up with him when he is back in town.

Shane: Seeing Karl was great… From the small parts I remember (laughs). Trevor Murdoch and Brian Breaker were on the last tour with us so it was good to see them. We spent many a nights drinking at Trevor’s bar in Missouri and he’s been a great help for us along our epic wrestling journey. Also just to hangout with English speaking people who understand our mannerisms was relaxing... Even if they did lock me out of my hotel room in my underwear. But that’s another story.

WPW: How long are you planning to stay in Japan for?

Mikey: As much as I would love to stay here longer we are scheduled to return back to Australia on May 10th.

Shane: What Mike said but for myself I'm straight back off overseas for a family holiday . So I won't be back till later in the month.

WPW: Would you like to say anything to friends and fans back home?

Mikey: It's been really nice to know that we have so much support coming from back home, it was very heartwarming to hear how many people were worried about us during the whole earthquake/end of the world disaster and even just from a wrestling point of view, everyone seems to be real supportive of everything we are doing. So I guess, thanks to everyone that has supported us and continues to. Keep up to date with what we are doing at Westside Pro Wrestling (facebook.com/westsideprowrestling) or if you want to be really special follow me on Twitter and/or Youtube.

Shane: What Mike said but with more mushy stuff. Really I just want my fans (and fans of Perth Wrestling) that I’ll be coming home with new determination and ready to crack skulls and win championships. Sex, drugs and THEN rock n roll.

WPW: Thanks for speaking to Westside Pro Wrestling guys!

PRESS RELEASE: Explosive Alliance set to change the face of WA wrestling.

PRESS RELEASE

SUNDAY - MAY 15, 2011

EXPLOSIVE ALLIANCE TO CHANGE THE FACE OF WA PRO WRESTLING

Explosive Pro Wrestling (EPW) along with the Southern Hemisphere Wrestling Alliance (SHWA) have some of the most exciting news to have hit the Western Australian Pro Wrestling scene for a number of years. As of today, the Southern Hemisphere Wrestling Alliance will be moving out of the SHWA Forge and into Explosive Pro Wrestling’s training facility, The Dynamite Factory.

The Dynamite Factory has been going strong since 2002 producing some of the best talent in the country, including Bobby Marshall, Shane Haste and current EPW Champion/Head trainer, Davis Storm had this to say about the new alliance "We see it as an exciting step forward for the WA wrestling scene. Hopefully it can lead to a more inclusive atmosphere that will benefit fans, wrestlers and promoters alike. The Dynamite Factory has always been a hub for progression and learning in professional wrestling and we think this will ensure that the only direction for wrestling in this state is up and onwards."

The two companies will continue to remain separate entities, but will have a relationship similar
to that between World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Florida Championship Wrestling
(FCW), with the possibility of talent appearing on each other’s events. This is an unprecedented
move not only in WA, but wrestling throughout Australia with two companies coming together
for the betterment of the scene. SHWA’s General Manager Amanda Kirk had this to say
about the burgeoning alliance "These are exciting times; it gives a new life to the Perth Pro
Wrestling scene and sets an example for the nation. The possibilities are endless."

Explosive Pro Wrestling’s next event "Midday Mayhem 2" will be held at the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre on June 12, 2011. For more details on the show visit www.epwperth.com

Southern Hemisphere Wrestling Alliance’s next event "SHWA Invades Midland" will be held at the Swan Park Leisure Centre in Midvale on May 22, 2011, as well as being part of the Supanova Pop Culture Expo at Claremont Showgrounds over the weekend of June 25-26, 2011. About Explosive Pro Wrestling
Nearly Ten years ago the dormant Pro-Wrestling scene of Western Australia was awakened by a group named Explosive Coastal Wrestling, who held their first event, aptly titled “Awakening” at the Wanneroo Civic Centre. Today, known as Explosive Pro Wrestling (EPW) the company has been the pinnacle of the WA scene since that day in November 2001, becoming affiliated with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) in 2005.

EPW performers have made names for themselves on the Australian and International scenes. Names such as Shane Haste and Mikey Nicholls, who have just returned from touring for Pro Wrestling NOAH in Japan, Bobby Marshall who has wrestled throughout the United States and featured on National Wrestling Alliance television programming and four time EPW Champion, Davis Storm.

About Southern Hemisphere Wrestling Alliance
December 2008 saw a new fledgling company named Southern Hemisphere Wrestling Alliance (SHWA) hold their first event “Exodus” at the Karrinyup Sports Centre. Over the next two and half years SHWA formed alliances with Adelaide’s Snakepit Pro Wrestling and Sydney’s Australasian Wrestling Federation.

Current SHWA Champion, Jarrad Slate, was trained in Calgary, Alberta, Canada by former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) star, Lance Storm. Slate along with talent such as “Mad” Mike Massive, Jake Paragon and Crimson Lightning have wrestled Interstate.
